This study was performed to get the informations for utilization of F₁ hybrids between varieties in red pepper. Seven varieties of 2640-A, 2640-B, 2640-C, 621, 2520, Hot portugal and Hushimi and eleven F₁ hybrids were used as materials. They were comparatively investigated in the days from seeding to first flowering, number of fruits and fresh weight of fruits in randomized block arrangement with two replications. The results obtained are summarized as follows:
(1) The days to first flowering were decreased in F₁ hybrids than in their parents. When compared with either parent in each F₁ combination the days to flowering in all the F₁ hybrids were earlier than the later flowering parent, while it was earlier or later than the earlier flowering parent according to F₁ hybrids. Difference between total means of F₁ hybrids and the parental varieties in the days to flowering was 7.6 days.
(2) Yields (number of fruits and fresh weight of fruits) in F1 hybrids also were generally higher than means of their parents. Compared with either parent in each F₁ combination, yields were higher in all the F₁ hybrids than smaller productive parent while it was higher or smaller than the higher productive parent.
(3) Difference between total means of F₁ hybrids and parental varieties, in number of the early immature, the mature and its total fruits per plant, were 16.1, 5.1 and 21.1, respectively, showing higher number of fruits in F₁.
(4) Difference between total means of F₁ hybrid and parental varieties, in fresh weight of the early immature, the mature and its total fruits per plant were 71.4%, 55.4% and 62.5% respectively, showing higher yields in F₁.
(5) Degree of heterosis was highly variable among F₁, combinations in the days to flowering, number of fruits and fresh weight of fruits.
